How to Ventilate Properly in Fall and Winter: Tips & Solutions

As the days grow shorter and cooler, the air inside the house changes too: the heat goes on, we ventilate less, and we spend more time indoors. All of this can lead to increased humidity in the rooms, lingering odors, and, in the worst case, mold. It’s a good thing to have a decentralized ventilation system — ideally one with heat recovery from LUNOS — which saves heating energy while maintaining a comfortable room temperature, thanks to its high heat recovery rate of up to 93%.

As a first step when temperatures start to drop, we recommend having your ventilation system serviced to get it ready for the season.

Here's how to do it:

    1. First, check the inner screen and visible accessories for dirt, and then carefully remove them
    2. Remove the filter and clean it or (depending on the filter type) replace it
    3. Remove any visible debris from the filter housing, behind the screen, and from the heat exchanger or unit
    4. Check and clean the exterior parts, such as the grilles or screens
    5. Perform a functional test after the hood, grille, and screen have been closed again

Ventilate properly and save on heating costs when it's cold outside

If you have a modern ventilation system with heat recovery, you benefit in several ways: Not only do you enjoy a constant supply of fresh, filtered air in your living spaces, but you also save valuable heating energy. This is because heat recovery ensures that the fresh air enters your home preheated. This works because the used, warm indoor air transfers its heat to the incoming fresh air before being expelled outside. This means you don’t have to heat the house any further if you still want more fresh air, and you enjoy a comfortable indoor climate. Another advantage of this technology is its contribution to environmental protection: By efficiently utilizing existing thermal energy, you reduce your household’s CO₂ emissions and thus make an important contribution to a more climate-friendly world.

Our tips on how to ventilate properly in cold weather:

    1. Open windows wide instead of leaving them ajar: Open windows on opposite sides of the room several times a day for about 5–10 minutes. This allows the air to circulate quickly without letting the walls and furniture get too cold.
    2. Turn down the heat while ventilating: Briefly turn the thermostat valves off or set them to low while ventilating to save energy.
    3. Turn the heat back on after ventilating: Immediately after closing the windows, the heat should be turned back up to the desired temperature.
    4. Ventilate after moisture builds up: After showering, cooking, or mopping, ventilate immediately to remove moisture.
    5. Keep interior walls warm: Maintaining consistent temperatures prevents condensation and mold. Rooms should not get too cold.

Our product recommendations for minimizing heat loss when ventilating in winter

Ventilate properly when it's windy outside

Our outer grilles & outer hoods are specifically designed to reliably withstand the normal, constant wind conditions typical in Germany. You can be confident that the products will function fully even under typical weather conditions. However, in the event of exceptionally strong gusts of wind or stormy conditions, we recommend temporarily closing the exterior shutters to provide additional protection for the components. Please note that the ventilation units must be turned off while the grilles are closed, as otherwise sufficient air exchange cannot be guaranteed and the units could be damaged. Once the weather has calmed down and the wind has returned to normal levels, you can reopen the exterior grilles and resume operation of the fans as usual.
